Dubai, UAE – Former Indian cricket coach Ravi Shastri has praised Team India’s decision to include mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy in the playing XI. The 33-year-old showcased his skills by taking five wickets for just 42 runs in India’s commanding 44-run victory over New Zealand in the final Group A match of the ongoing tournament in Dubai on Sunday.
Shastri Applauds Team India’s Selection
Speaking in an ICC video posted on Instagram, Shastri lauded the team’s strategy, emphasizing the importance of bringing in a wicket-taking bowler like Chakravarthy in the crucial middle overs.
“Very impressed with him (Chakravarthy), and full marks to the think tank and the team management for making the right choice because he’s someone who will get you wickets in the middle overs. It’s the right time to unleash him,” said Shastri.
Chakravarthy’s Impact and Tournament Significance
Chakravarthy’s inclusion proved to be a game-changer as his unpredictable spin made it difficult for New Zealand’s batsmen to build a partnership. Shastri believes that the mystery spinner will play a crucial role in the knockout stage, especially against teams like Australia, South Africa, and other sides that haven’t faced him much.
“They brought him into the side; he’s got a five-wicket haul, and I think he’s there to stay,” Shastri said. “If you see his current form – and I always believe in current form – it’s vital. His body language, self-confidence, and belief in his own ability are evident. When you look at oppositions like New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa that are left in this tournament, not many have played too much of him or seen enough of him.”
India Should Stick to the Same Playing XI, Says Shastri
With the semifinal against Australia just around the corner, Shastri suggested that India should retain the same team, given the limited turnaround time between matches.
“I think I would go with the same eleven now because the turnaround time is less than 48 hours. The square is a little tired at the moment; people have run on the pitch that is going to be used the day after, so the spinners will again come into play,” Shastri added.
India’s spinners have been key contributors in the tournament so far, and with Dubai’s pitch favoring turn, Chakravarthy could once again prove to be a match-winner.
Chakravarthy Credits Senior Players for His Performance
Following his remarkable performance, Chakravarthy expressed his gratitude towards the senior players in the team, who provided guidance and support during the match.
“The senior players helped me, and as the game went on, I felt better,” Chakravarthy shared. “I am not a big turner (of the ball), but if you bowl in the right areas, there was help from the surface.”
His statement highlights the role of experience and mentorship in high-pressure games, something that has significantly helped him perform at his best on the international stage.
India’s Road to the Semifinals
India has dominated Group A, winning all three of their matches convincingly. The team is now set to face Australia in the first semifinal on Tuesday, also in Dubai. With Chakravarthy in top form and Shastri backing the team’s strategy, Indian fans are hopeful for another strong performance.
