Carlos Alcaraz showed his class once again as he helped Team Europe build a strong opening-day lead at the Laver Cup 2025. Playing alongside Czech talent Jakub Mensik, the Spaniard powered his side to a 7-6(7), 6-4 victory over Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen. The win gave Europe a 3-1 advantage at the close of day one, placing them in control of the tournament.

The match carried extra excitement as it marked Alcaraz’s return to competition following his US Open triumph earlier this month. With the win in New York, he also reclaimed the world number one ranking. On Friday night, he translated that form into doubles success, dazzling fans with skill at the net and from the baseline.

Speaking after the match, Alcaraz praised the importance of teamwork in doubles. He explained that while his aggressive play created openings, it was Mensik’s consistency and power that made the difference. “It was a team effort,” Alcaraz said. “Jakub played with great confidence, and that made me feel comfortable on the court.”

Mensik’s ability to deliver big serves and strike with precision under pressure complemented Alcaraz’s creativity. Together, they secured a vital break in the tenth game of the second set, which sealed the victory for Team Europe.

The Laver Cup, held this year at San Francisco’s Chase Center, is a unique event in tennis. Often described as the sport’s answer to golf’s Ryder Cup, the three-day competition brings together the best players from Europe and the rest of the world. Matches are scored in a way that raises the stakes each day, with one point awarded per win on day one, two points on day two, and three points on the final day. The first team to reach 13 points out of 24 is crowned champion.

Team Europe, winners of five of the six previous editions, started the day in commanding style. Norwegian star Casper Ruud opened the campaign with a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Reilly Opelka. Ruud’s baseline game proved too strong, giving Europe their first point of the competition.

In the second singles match, Jakub Mensik stepped onto the court again and showed why he is regarded as one of the rising stars of tennis. He outlasted Michelsen in a tense contest, winning 6-1, 7-6(3), 10-8. The Czech teenager displayed maturity beyond his years, especially in the deciding tiebreak, where his aggressive returns and steady play earned Europe another point.

However, Team World refused to be swept aside. Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca fought back strongly against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli. Despite trailing early, Fonseca regrouped and produced a bold attacking performance to win 6-4, 6-3. His victory ensured Team World avoided a 4-0 deficit and entered day two still in contention.

Fonseca admitted the pressure was high but said his determination to stay positive carried him through. He explained that playing aggressive tennis helped him maintain control of the rallies and prevented Cobolli from dictating the pace of the match.

Still, the day belonged to Alcaraz and his inspiring doubles display. Fans inside the Chase Center witnessed glimpses of brilliance that highlighted why he is considered one of the most complete players in modern tennis. From lightning-quick reflex volleys to forehand winners down the line, the 21-year-old kept the crowd on its feet.

The 2025 edition of the Laver Cup promises more drama as the action continues into the weekend. With double points on offer on Saturday and triple points on Sunday, the standings could shift quickly. Team Europe, though, have put themselves in a strong position to chase another title.

For Alcaraz, the tournament is another chance to showcase his versatility and leadership. His ability to blend with a young partner like Mensik not only boosts Europe’s chances but also sends a clear message about the team’s depth. With more matches ahead, tennis fans can expect further magical moments in this celebrated event.
