Being cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe can skyrocket an actor’s career. The franchise has grown so popular that landing any role, hero or villain, can secure a place in Hollywood history. Over the years, several big-name stars passed on Marvel roles for various reasons, giving us the familiar cast we now love. Imagine if Tom Cruise had played Iron Man—it would have been a very different Marvel world.

Before Ben Affleck took on Daredevil in 2003, Matt Damon was Marvel’s first choice. Damon admitted he loved the character but didn’t know the director’s work well, so he declined. Given that the film was not well-received, Damon might have dodged a bullet. Marvel repeatedly tried to cast Joaquin Phoenix, first for Hulk and later for Doctor Strange. Phoenix turned both roles down, saying superhero films never felt fulfilling to him.

Years before Aquaman, Jason Momoa was invited to play Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy. Momoa turned it down, feeling it was too similar to roles he had played before. DC later cast him as Aquaman. Before Gwyneth Paltrow became Tony Stark’s love interest, Marvel wanted Rachel McAdams for Pepper Pots. Scheduling conflicts stopped her, but she later joined the MCU in Doctor Strange. Bryan Cranston was offered the role of Sebastian Shaw in X-Men: First Class. He passed to star in Drive instead, and Kevin Bacon eventually played the mutant.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was the first choice for Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy. He had scheduling conflicts, so Chris Pratt got the role after initially declining himself. Emily Blunt accepted Black Widow initially, but her contract for Gulliver’s Travels prevented her from taking it. Scarlett Johansson later became the perfect fit for the character. Marvel wanted McConaughey to play Ego the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. He declined, feeling the role was added only to include a big name. Mel Gibson was first considered for Odin in Thor. He simply declined, leaving the role to Anthony Hopkins, who became iconic in the role. Olivia Wilde was Marvel’s first choice for Gamora, but scheduling conflicts made her turn it down. The role eventually went to Zoe Saldana.

Tom Cruise was set to become Tony Stark but lost interest when Marvel delayed the rights. Robert Downey Jr. eventually took the role, now seen as perfect. Leonardo DiCaprio rejected roles in both Marvel and DC films, including Spider-Man and Robin, stating the characters lacked complexity at the time. Dougray Scott was first cast as Wolverine but had scheduling conflicts due to Mission Impossible 2. Hugh Jackman was offered the role days before filming, becoming a fan favorite. Brie Larson initially refused Captain Marvel to avoid the fame of superhero roles. She eventually accepted, and the film broke box office records.

Other notable almost-casts include Amandla Stenberg, who turned down Shuri in Black Panther for moral reasons. Jessica Chastain passed on Maya Hansen in Iron Man 3 and the Wasp in Ant-Man. Olivia Munn declined Vanessa in Deadpool, refusing a girlfriend role. Josh Hartnett rejected Spider-Man and other superhero roles to avoid typecasting. Quinton Jackson couldn’t train for X-Men Origins: Wolverine while preparing for MMA fights. Alec Baldwin declined a Marvel villain role due to family commitments. Jensen Ackles missed Captain America and Hawkeye due to scheduling conflicts. Edward Norton, Vince Vaughn, and David Duchovny were considered for Hulk before Mark Ruffalo. Timothy Olyphant auditioned for Iron Man but lost to Robert Downey Jr. Saoirse Ronan regretted not auditioning for Scarlet Witch. Sam Rockwell stepped aside for Robert Downey Jr., later playing Justin Hammer. Val Kilmer was originally set for Captain America in 1990. Alexander Skarsgård nearly became Thor. John Krasinski auditioned for Captain America but didn’t get the part.

Marvel casting history is full of surprises. Many actors declined iconic roles, giving the MCU a unique lineup we now celebrate. While fans can imagine what might have been, the choices made by these actors shaped the Marvel Universe we enjoy today.
