RICHMOND, VA – The 2025 Virginia High School League (VHSL) Swim & Dive State Championships witnessed a standout performance by John Champe High School’s swimming team, with senior Omar Mourad making waves by clinching gold in both an individual event and a relay race. His victory highlighted an impressive showing by swimmers from Loudoun County, reinforcing the region’s strength in high school swimming.

Omar Mourad Leads John Champe to Victory

Mourad’s stellar performance saw him dominate in the 100-yard freestyle, where he touched the wall first, securing his first gold medal of the championship. He then joined his teammates in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where their collective effort resulted in another first-place finish, adding to John Champe’s medal tally.

“This was an unforgettable experience. We trained hard all season, and seeing it pay off at the state level means everything,” said Mourad.

Loudoun County Swimmers Excel

Beyond John Champe’s success, several other Loudoun County athletes delivered remarkable performances. Swimmers from Riverside High School, Stone Bridge High School, and Broad Run High School reached the podium in multiple events. Notably, Riverside’s Emma Johnson secured silver in the 200-yard individual medley, while Stone Bridge’s Lucas Patel earned bronze in the 50-yard freestyle.

Championship Highlights and Records

The state championships, held at the Richmond Aquatic Center, featured intense competition, with swimmers from across Virginia setting new benchmarks. Among the highlights:

  • Madison High School’s relay team broke a state record in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
  • Sophie Reynolds of Yorktown High School shattered her personal best in the 100-yard backstroke, claiming gold.
  • The overall team championship went to Oakton High School, which amassed the highest combined points across all events.

A Season of Dedication and Triumph

Loudoun County’s swimmers attributed their success to rigorous training and teamwork. John Champe’s coach, Michael Turner, praised the athletes’ dedication, stating, “This year’s team exceeded expectations. Watching Omar and the rest of the team perform at such a high level was incredible.”

As the 2025 season wraps up, swimmers are already setting their sights on next year’s championship. With rising talent and continued commitment, Loudoun County’s swimmers are poised for even greater achievements in the seasons to come.
