Rawalpindi, Pakistan – Australia’s Champions Trophy campaign took an unexpected turn when their group-stage match against South Africa was washed out due to persistent rain. Skipper Steve Smith revealed that the team had a contingency plan ready, which included adapting their playing XI to suit a reduced-over, T20-style match.
With rain delaying the game, match officials had until 7:30 PM local time (12:30 AM AEDT) to decide whether at least 20 overs per side could be played. However, after nearly four hours of waiting, the game was officially abandoned as the weather showed no signs of improvement.
Smith’s Backup Plan for a Rain-Shortened Match
In the event of a reduced-overs contest, Smith indicated that Australia would have made strategic changes to their lineup, prioritizing aggressive batting and a fast-paced approach.
“When we were watching the rain fall, we were probably looking at a different team for a rain-reduced game,” Smith shared on Amazon Prime’s coverage. “You’ve got to think on your feet with those things. We’ve got a good squad of 15 players, and you have to utilize them as best as you can.”
This could have meant an opportunity for power-hitters like Jake Fraser-McGurk and Aaron Hardie to make the XI. They, along with Sean Abbott and Tanveer Sangha, had been left out of Australia’s tournament-opening five-wicket win against England.
Group B Standings Shake Up After Washout
With both Australia and South Africa taking one point each from the abandoned fixture, Group B remains wide open. All four teams—Australia, South Africa, England, and Afghanistan—still have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals.
In the current standings, South Africa leads Group B after a dominant 107-run victory over Afghanistan. Meanwhile, India and New Zealand have already secured their spots in the semi-finals from Group A.
For Australia, the equation is now simple. They must win their final group-stage clash against Afghanistan on Friday night to guarantee a place in the knockout rounds. A loss would leave their fate dependent on the result of Saturday’s England vs. South Africa matchup.
“They’re a dangerous side on their day, like every team in this tournament,” Smith said about Afghanistan. “Our equation is pretty simple now … if we win, we’re locked into the top four.”
India’s ‘Home Advantage’ in Dubai?
While Pakistan is officially hosting the tournament, India’s matches—including any potential semi-finals and finals—have been scheduled in Dubai due to political tensions between the two nations. Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes this arrangement gives India a significant edge.
“I saw a tweet the other day saying, ‘Pakistan host nation, India home advantage.’ And that sums it up,” Hussain commented on Sky Sports. “They’re in one place, one hotel, one dressing room. They know the pitch. They picked their squad specifically for that pitch.”
Hussain further pointed out that India strategically selected a spin-heavy bowling lineup, anticipating Dubai’s conditions. “There was some debate from Indian media about why they didn’t pick an extra seamer. Well, we’ve seen why,” he added.
On the other hand, Pakistan, despite hosting the tournament, had to travel between Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. “Other teams have to pick players for different conditions and then travel and adjust. India doesn’t have to,” Hussain noted.
Upcoming Fixtures and Knockout Scenarios
With Group B still undecided, the final round of matches will determine the two teams advancing to the semi-finals. Afghanistan faces England next on Wednesday evening AEDT, while Australia and South Africa will play their crucial encounters on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Should Australia win against Afghanistan, they could potentially top Group B and face second-placed India from Group A in the semi-finals. However, a defeat could open the door for other teams to edge past them in the standings.
As the tournament heads into its decisive phase, all eyes will be on Australia’s next fixture, where a victory is paramount for their semi-final aspirations.
