Richmond, Australia – Richmond Tigers veteran Dion Prestia has suffered another injury setback and will miss the start of the AFL season after an Achilles tendon issue flared up during training. The experienced midfielder, who has battled persistent injuries in recent years, remains without a definitive recovery timeline.

The 32-year-old three-time premiership winner managed only 13 games last season due to multiple soft-tissue injuries. His latest setback means he will be unavailable for Richmond’s opening clash against Carlton on March 13.

Prestia’s Recovery Plan Unclear

Richmond’s high-performance manager, Ben Serpell, confirmed the news, stating that Prestia will need a rehabilitation period to address the issue.

“Unfortunately, Dion has an Achilles issue that will require a rehabilitation phase over the coming weeks,” Serpell said.

“He has put in a solid amount of work across the pre-season and was in excellent condition. However, we now need to focus on getting his Achilles right, which will likely rule him out for the early rounds of the season.”

This latest injury raises concerns about Prestia’s durability as he enters the later stages of his career. Richmond’s medical staff will monitor his progress, but there is no set date for his return.

Tough Start for the Tigers

Richmond endured a challenging 2023 season, finishing at the bottom of the ladder with the wooden spoon. The absence of Prestia adds to the team’s struggles as they prepare for a tough start under second-year coach Adem Yze.

The Tigers will face a demanding fixture in the opening month, taking on 2023 finalists Carlton, Port Adelaide, and the Brisbane Lions, along with St Kilda. Without Prestia’s experience in the midfield, the team will need to rely on younger players to step up.

Injury Woes Continue

Prestia has built a reputation as a key playmaker for Richmond but has faced repeated injury setbacks since joining the club from Gold Coast in 2016. His ability to stay fit has been a major concern, with ongoing hamstring, calf, and soft-tissue issues limiting his game time in recent seasons.

Richmond fans will hope for a speedy recovery, as Prestia’s leadership and on-field presence remain crucial to the team’s success. The club has yet to provide an estimated return date, but updates are expected as he progresses through rehabilitation.
