As former U.S. President Donald Trump continues making controversial remarks about Canada becoming the 51st state, the United Kingdom is taking a careful stance. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has avoided direct criticism, instead emphasizing Canada’s sovereignty during a G7 meeting in Quebec.
In an exclusive interview with CBC’s The House, Lammy reiterated that Canada is a strong, independent nation. However, when asked if he personally found Trump’s rhetoric concerning, he declined to comment. Instead, he focused on unity, stating, “Canada is a sovereign country. It will continue to be a sovereign country.”
King Charles’ Role Under Scrutiny
Trump’s statements have put a spotlight on the role of King Charles III, who serves as head of state for both Canada and the U.K. The monarch has made gestures of support toward Canada, including wearing his Canadian military medals and planting a red maple tree at Buckingham Palace. However, he has remained silent on Trump’s annexation comments.
The situation became more complex when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer invited Trump to Balmoral, the royal residence in Scotland. This move raised questions about the U.K.’s stance on Trump’s views regarding Canada. At a joint press conference with U.S. officials, Starmer sidestepped a question about whether King Charles was concerned about Trump’s statements, saying, “We’re the closest of nations. But we didn’t discuss Canada.”
Canada-U.K. Diplomatic Relations
Despite the controversy, Canada and the U.K. continue to emphasize their strong ties. Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly recently described the relationship as being “in our DNA.” Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to visit London next week to meet with Starmer, marking his first international trip in office.
G7 Calls for Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire
While discussions about Canada’s sovereignty made headlines, the G7 foreign ministers also focused on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The ministers backed a U.S.-led ceasefire proposal that Ukraine has accepted. The plan is now awaiting Russia’s response.
“The ball is in Russia’s court,” Joly said. Lammy echoed this sentiment, urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept the ceasefire terms. He emphasized the importance of Ukraine securing long-term safety guarantees, saying, “This is about ensuring an enduring peace.”
In a joint statement, G7 ministers reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence. They also warned of additional sanctions on Russia if it refuses the ceasefire agreement. Proposed measures include oil price caps and increased financial aid for Ukraine.
Canada and U.K. Stand Together on Ukraine
Despite diplomatic caution regarding Trump’s comments, Canada and the U.K. remain aligned on Ukraine. Lammy noted that both countries have been proactive in supporting Ukraine and will continue working within the international coalition to strengthen security measures.
“This coalition of the willing is forming, and the United Kingdom and Canada are side by side within it,” Lammy said.
As global leaders navigate these pressing issues, Canada finds itself balancing strong international alliances while responding to Trump’s controversial statements. Meanwhile, the U.K. remains cautious, prioritizing diplomatic stability over direct confrontation.
