Khartoum, Sudan – The Sudanese government has announced plans to impose an import ban on Kenyan products, escalating tensions between the two nations. This move follows allegations that Kenya is supporting activities of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) within its borders.
Sudan’s Escalatory Measures Against Kenya
Hussein al-Amin, Undersecretary of Sudan’s Foreign Ministry, confirmed on February 24 that Sudan will take retaliatory steps against Kenya. He stated that economic sanctions, including restrictions on Kenyan imports, are imminent.
“We will take economic actions, including banning the import of Kenyan products, especially since Sudan is one of Kenya’s largest tea importers,” al-Amin declared.
Sudan is also set to file a formal complaint with the African Union (AU) and other international organizations, citing Kenya’s alleged interference in Sudan’s internal affairs.
“We will submit a memorandum to the African Union and other international organizations and implement escalatory measures against Kenya for its hostile positions toward Sudan,” he added.
Kenya Accused of Supporting RSF
The Sudanese government alleges that Kenya is supporting the RSF, which has been in conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since April 2023. This accusation follows Kenya’s recent hosting of RSF representatives and allied groups in Nairobi, where they signed a founding charter for a parallel government.
Al-Amin criticized Kenya’s actions, labeling them as violations of international agreements, including those set by the United Nations (UN), the AU, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
“This is a hostile act and blatant interference in Sudan’s internal affairs,” he remarked.
Kenya’s Position on the Sudan Conflict
Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Minister for Foreign & Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, defended the meeting in Nairobi, stating that it was aimed at promoting peace and stability in Sudan.
“The Kenyan government is aware of the activities of RSF, Sudanese political parties, civil society, and military groups in Nairobi. These steps are welcomed and encouraging in the journey toward peace, stability, and democratic governance in Sudan,” Mudavadi said on February 23.
He also emphasized that the peace roadmap signed in Nairobi showcases the commitment of Sudanese political and civil groups to unity and reconciliation.
“This initiative reflects their dedication to prioritizing Sudan’s future over divisions,” he added.
Sudan Recalls Ambassador from Kenya
In response to Kenya’s engagement with the RSF, Sudan recalled its ambassador from Nairobi on February 20. Ambassador Kamal Jabara was summoned for consultations as Sudan’s Foreign Ministry accused Kenya of supporting efforts to establish a parallel government in Sudan.
The Sudanese government condemned Kenya’s actions as a breach of good neighborly relations and a violation of pledges made by Kenyan President William Ruto. A statement released on February 18 emphasized that Kenya’s decision contradicts its commitments to non-interference.
Economic Implications of the Import Ban
Sudan is a significant importer of Kenyan tea and other agricultural products. A ban on Kenyan imports could affect trade relations between the two nations, particularly in the agriculture and consumer goods sectors. Kenya’s tea industry, which relies on international markets, may experience economic strain if Sudan follows through with its decision.
Trade analysts suggest that the deteriorating diplomatic ties could have broader implications on East African regional stability and economic cooperation within the East African Community (EAC).
International Response and Future Outlook
The African Union and IGAD have yet to issue formal statements on the matter. However, diplomatic sources indicate that mediators may intervene to ease tensions. Observers stress that a prolonged diplomatic standoff could undermine regional peace efforts.
As the situation unfolds, Sudan’s planned economic sanctions and Kenya’s diplomatic response will shape the future of their bilateral relations. For further updates on this developing story, visit News Xpress Online.
