David Sudbrink, a standout student from Nolensville, Tennessee, has been recognized with the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence (CASE) from the State University of New York (SUNY). Sudbrink, a dual major in Public Accountancy and Finance at SUNY Fredonia, was among 193 students statewide to receive this esteemed honor.
The CASE award, which was presented at a ceremony in Albany, New York, on April 29, highlights students who excel in academics, leadership, campus involvement, community service, and the arts. Sudbrink’s exceptional achievements in both his academic studies and extracurricular activities have set him apart as a leader among his peers.
A Remarkable Academic Journey
Sudbrink’s academic record speaks volumes about his dedication and hard work. He has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA across both of his majors, accounting and finance, earning him recognition as one of the top students at SUNY Fredonia. His commitment to excellence has also been acknowledged with seven academic awards, which celebrate his scholastic achievements as well as his contributions to extracurricular activities.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Sudbrink has completed internships with two highly regarded accounting firms: Deloitte & Touche LLP, the largest accounting firm in the world, and The Bonadio Group, which ranks among the Top 50 accounting firms in the country. These internships, both held at the firms’ Buffalo, New York offices, led to a full-time position offer from Deloitte & Touche, which Sudbrink has accepted.
Community Engagement and Leadership
Sudbrink’s commitment to community service is equally impressive. As a volunteer tax preparer in the School of Business’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, Sudbrink helped generate over $200,000 in tax returns for the local community, free of charge. His contributions go beyond academics, showcasing his passion for giving back and making a positive impact on those around him.
Beyond his academic and service achievements, Sudbrink has also demonstrated significant leadership skills. He served as the vice president and program chair of the campus Accounting Society, where he helped organize events and initiatives that benefited both students and the broader community.
Athletic Achievements and Team Leadership
Sudbrink is not just an academic and community leader; he has also excelled as a student-athlete. A member of the SUNY Fredonia hockey team, Sudbrink’s athletic contributions have been equally outstanding. His efforts on the ice earned him four consecutive American Hockey Coaches Association All-American Scholar honors.
As a team captain for two consecutive years, Sudbrink guided his teammates both on and off the ice. Under his leadership, the Fredonia Blue Devils achieved a historic milestone in the fall of 2023, recording the highest combined GPA in the team’s history—3.59. Though this record was broken the following spring, it remains a testament to Sudbrink’s ability to inspire excellence among his teammates.
In addition to his leadership on the rink, Sudbrink organized and participated in numerous campus and community events with his hockey team. These included charitable initiatives like Pink the Rink, DFT Community Day, a scrap metal drive to benefit the Lakeshore Humane Society, and events such as Community Safe Trick-or-Treat and the Community Easter Egg Hunt. His team also provided Christmas presents to underprivileged children, further demonstrating their commitment to serving the community.
Recognition and Future Plans
Sudbrink’s accomplishments at SUNY Fredonia are a testament to his work ethic, leadership, and academic excellence. In addition to his academic and athletic achievements, Sudbrink is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society, where he has served as vice president of finance since 2023. His involvement with the Judicial Board since 2021 also underscores his leadership and dedication to his academic community.
Looking ahead, Sudbrink’s future is bright as he prepares to begin his professional career at Deloitte & Touche LLP, where he will continue to build on the foundation of excellence he established at SUNY Fredonia.
