As Canada prepares for its federal election on April 28, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) has released the results of a political survey highlighting how party leaders view key issues around Ukraine, security, and displaced communities.
The UCC sent a five-question survey to the leaders of Canada’s four main federal parties: the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party, the New Democratic Party (NDP), and the Green Party. Each party responded, providing insight into their priorities ahead of a high-stakes election for both Canada and its global partners.
What the Survey Focused On
The survey asked party leaders to share their views on five major topics:
- Canada’s national security and defense
- Domestic and global energy stability
- Continued military aid to Ukraine
- Diplomatic efforts to isolate Russia
- Support for Ukrainian refugees in Canada
According to the UCC, these topics are essential for Canada’s security and its position on the world stage. “The future of Canada’s freedom and the freedom of Europe depend on our ability to defend our sovereignty and our national interest,” the survey introduction states. “Assisting Ukraine in defending its own independence – and the freedom of Europe – is a fundamental national security interest for Canada.”
UCC Stresses the Stakes
Alexandra Chyczij, President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, emphasized how important this snap election will be, not just for Canada, but also for its allies and the Ukrainian people.
“We are grateful to the leaders of Canada’s national political parties for responding to our survey,” Chyczij said. “It is vital that Canadians are well-informed as we head to election day, and the UCC is proud to play a role in our democratic process.”
The UCC survey results aim to help voters make informed decisions about each party’s stance on foreign policy and humanitarian aid.
Ukrainian World Congress Supports UCC Effort
The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), a major international body representing Ukrainian communities abroad, praised the UCC’s initiative as a model for others.
“This is an excellent example for other global Ukrainian communities on how to influence policy decisions in their countries,” said UWC President Paul Grod. “It’s also worth highlighting that every party responded to the survey, giving us a strong foundation to hold them accountable for their campaign commitments.”
Why the Survey Matters Now
Canada has played a key role in supporting Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Over the past three years, the country has provided military assistance, diplomatic pressure, and refugee support.
Thousands of displaced Ukrainians have found temporary or permanent homes in Canada. The policies adopted by the next government will directly affect their future—making this election a defining moment for Canada’s role in the conflict and its humanitarian efforts.
Support Extends Beyond Canada
Inspired by the UCC survey, the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) has launched its own “Ukraine Policy Survey.” It was sent to political candidates ahead of Australia’s federal election. The AFUO survey was created following talks with UWC leaders during an official visit to Australia.
This shows a growing global trend of Ukrainian communities stepping up to influence government policies where they live.
What Comes Next?
With just days until Canada heads to the polls, Ukrainian Canadians and supporters are expected to use the UCC survey as a voter guide.
The full results of the UCC survey are available to the public and offer a side-by-side look at what each party leader had to say. These answers give voters a clearer picture of where the future government might take Canada’s foreign policy and humanitarian strategy.
