Social media rumours claim a massive comet is hurtling toward Earth, sparking alarm among users across multiple platforms. Some posts even suggest it could be alien technology or that military forces are preparing to intercept it. The speculation gained traction after a September 29 story in the New York Post titled “‘Massive’ comet hurtling toward us is larger than previously thought, could be alien tech, scientist says.” Screenshots and reposts circulated widely, with accounts claiming the comet is moving at speeds of 130,000 mph and that special crews are being deployed to stop it.

Some users falsely attributed statements to physicist Michio Kaku, suggesting the object could be a hostile probe. Other posts named fictional teams like the “Freedom Team” and “Independence Team,” further fueling online panic. The comet in question, 3I/ATLAS, is an interstellar object detected by NASA’s ATLAS telescope on July 1, 2025. NASA describes it as having “a teardrop-shaped cocoon of dust coming off its solid, icy nucleus” and confirmed it poses no threat to Earth. Its closest approach occurred on July 21 at approximately 270 million kilometres (167.8 million miles) from our planet.

The European Space Agency (ESA) also verified that 3I/ATLAS is harmless, noting that its closest distance is more than 2.5 times the distance between Earth and the Sun. The comet will reach its nearest point to the Sun on October 30, 2025, at around 210 million km (130.5 million miles), near Mars’ orbit. Despite its safe trajectory, 3I/ATLAS is notable for its speed. Hubble Space Telescope observations show it travelling at roughly 210,000 km/h (130,500 mph), the fastest recorded for an interstellar visitor to the solar system.

NASA highlighted that astronomers have a rare chance to study an object from beyond our solar system. Observations as of August 20, 2025, estimate the comet’s nucleus measures between 440 metres (1,444 feet) and 5.6 km (3.5 miles) in diameter. SANAD, Al Jazeera’s fact-checking agency, investigated the rumours. There is no evidence supporting claims that 3I/ATLAS is an alien spacecraft or that it is being intercepted by the US military. Images circulating online attributed to Michio Kaku were taken from a February 2025 interview, months before the comet’s discovery.

Both NASA and ESA urge the public to treat 3I/ATLAS as a scientific opportunity, not a threat. Astronomers are continuing to monitor the comet as it moves through the solar system, allowing for further study of its interstellar origins. Comet 3I/ATLAS is entirely safe and poses no danger to Earth. Viral rumours of alien technology or imminent collision are false. Experts recommend enjoying this event as a unique chance to observe a rare visitor from beyond our solar system.
