Beijing is moving to tighten control over its major technology companies by requiring independent oversight within the firms. Draft regulations released for public comment by the Cyberspace Administration of China propose the creation of “Personal Information Protection Supervisory Committees” at the nation’s largest online platforms.
The proposed rules aim to monitor how these companies handle user data and ensure compliance with China’s strict cybersecurity and privacy laws. By embedding internal supervisors, the government seeks to strengthen regulatory enforcement without relying solely on external audits.
This step reflects Beijing’s ongoing effort to assert authority over its tech sector, which has grown rapidly but also drawn scrutiny over data privacy, market dominance, and compliance with national regulations.
