Finnish President Alexander Stubb has expressed deep concern over the tense exchange between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. leaders at the White House on Friday, calling it a diplomatic failure that benefited only Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“It was a diplomatic failure with only one winner, who wasn’t even present: Vladimir Putin,” Stubb told Yle on Saturday.
A Tense White House Meeting
The meeting in the Oval Office between Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance became heated, with differing views on the ongoing war in Ukraine. Stubb, who was watching developments closely, said he was “astonished and saddened” by the open display of discord, something he had never seen captured on camera in international diplomacy.
During the exchange, Trump accused Zelensky of “gambling with World War Three,” a remark that sparked widespread criticism. Stubb emphasized the importance of measured language, especially during delicate diplomatic discussions. “Words matter,” he stated, cautioning that rhetoric can escalate tensions unnecessarily.
Calls for Increased Pressure on Russia
Despite the White House controversy, Stubb reaffirmed his stance that Russia must face greater pressure to end its aggression. He stressed that any long-term solution to the Ukraine conflict must be backed by a well-structured and reliable process.
“Europe must take responsibility for leading this process,” he said. “Now, deals are being made left and right, above, below, and beside Ukraine. Yesterday, there was supposed to be a mineral deal, but it didn’t materialize.”
Ceasefire Talks and European Leadership
With discussions about a possible ceasefire after Easter, the Finnish president insisted that any agreement must have Ukraine’s full approval. The U.S. is expected to support security arrangements after a ceasefire, but Stubb believes Europe must take a leading role in negotiations.
“Should a ceasefire be reached, it will only be the beginning. The real challenge lies in securing lasting peace,” he stated. According to Stubb, the world is currently in a transitional phase that could take years to stabilize.
Finland’s Security and NATO’s Role
Despite the ongoing geopolitical turmoil, Stubb reassured Finns that their national defense remains robust. Finland, a NATO member, benefits from strong alliances and its own military capabilities.
“We’re fine,” he said. “Finland has a strong national defense and solid partnerships. I don’t believe Russia would test Article 5 [NATO’s mutual defense clause] in our case.”
As tensions continue, European leaders, including Stubb, are pushing for unity in addressing the Ukraine crisis. While the White House meeting exposed diplomatic rifts, the focus remains on securing a peaceful resolution.
